The Sacrament of Matrimony

Matrimony is the sacrament in which a man and a woman freely give themselves to one another in a lifelong covenant of faithful love. In the presence of the Church, they promise to love and honor each other for life, and God blesses and strengthens that union with His grace.

Through this sacrament, a couple’s love becomes a living sign of Christ’s faithful love for the Church. Marriage is meant to be permanent, faithful, and open to life. It is also a vocation, a calling from God, in which husband and wife help one another grow in holiness, build a home rooted in faith, and serve one another and the world with love.
