Throughout the Bible’s Old Testament, a sacred tradition is upheld in which the priests in ancient sanctuaries would feature or display a special ‘showbread’ or bread referred to as the ‘Bread of the Presence’. This bread was given honor and homage. The earliest mention of the Bread of the Presence in a sanctuary is all the way back at the beginning of the Bible in the book of Exodus. In Exodus 25, God Himself directly dictated to Moses to make a beautiful sanctuary. This temple was not unlike the modern Catholic places of worship, in that it was very ornate and decorated using pure gold, fine linens, lampstands, and statues of angels. In the sanctuary, a place of high honor, was a gold table displaying the showbread, or Bread of the Presence. The Bread of the Presence honored in the ancient temple of God was a pre-figuration to Christ becoming the Real Presence for us in the Holy Eucharist. Over a thousand years later, after the Old Testament, Christ came into the world under the New Covenant, and He revealed to us in John 6 that He is the true Bread of Life, the bread that has come down from heaven. When Christ states this in Scripture, He makes it clear that the Eucharist is not just a symbol, but truly His Real Presence when He states in John 6:55-56 that His Body is true food and His Blood true drink. This is why practicing Catholics truly believe and respect the words Christ gave us in the Scripture that Christ’s Real Presence is in the Eucharist. Since we believe this, Eucharistic Adoration has been a holy practice in the Church for centuries. Just like God directed Moses to design a beautiful sanctuary for the ancient showbread, or Bread of the Presence, Catholics today adore the Real Presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread. Like the beautiful sanctuary in Exodus, Catholics have the ability to adore Jesus in the beautiful churches or chapels that currently demonstrate Eucharistic Adoration today. Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is displayed in a special gold monstrance out of reverence for His Real Presence. When we adore Jesus in the Eucharist, it is extremely important that we demonstrate the same level of respect, love, and adoration as if we could visibly see Him in His human form. Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the most sacred and holy gift we will ever receive in this life. “O come let us adore Him,” for He truly is present with us in the Eucharist.
