Our fourth and fifth graders become more independent in their learning and technology becomes more infused into their daily learning. Students will have two teachers for their core subjects and begin changing classes. Students faith formation continues with deeper lessons on the liturgy and the liturgical year. They will continue Bible studies from both the Old and New Testament, and continued information on the Sacraments.
The English Language Arts curriculum becomes more advanced as students apply vocabulary to their writing and develop multiple styles of writing. Editing skills become very important so that students look for mistakes that they can improve on. Students will read and master literary text by studying multiple genres. They will continue learning about key ideas and structure of text, the relationship between the author and the descriptions used in a story, comparing and contrasting points of view, and being able to read and comprehend informational text.
Mathematically, students solve equations and problems and discuss how they solved them. Students explain to themselves the meaning of a problem and look for ways to solve it. Students experiment with representing problem situations in multiple ways including numbers, words (mathematical language), drawing pictures, using objects, acting out, making a chart, list, or graph, creating equations, etc. Students will be multiplying and dividing numbers within 100. Students will analyze graphs and learn to plot basic data points.
These students also learn Life, Physical, and Earth Science material as well as Social Studies principles in history, geography, and culture. These may be taught cross-curricularly through the reading and math curriculum. The experiences do not stop with the core curriculum, Fourth and Fifth Graders participate in physical education, visual arts, music, and Spanish.
