The eighth-grade students have been reading the novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. This novel is set in the 60s and revolves around two groups of teens, the Greasers from the East Side and the Socs from the West Side. The book follows their clashes and a Greaser’s struggle to understand right and wrong. To culminate the book activity, eighth graders had an opportunity to dress as a Greaser or a Soc and give a short 5 minute speech to answer the question, “Why is my gang the best,” using the text to cite support for their opinion. It is a fun way to celebrate this coming of age story.
